[R] why "R"?

When I tell several people here in the Philippines
about the wonders of using R, one of
the things I am asked is why is it called "R"?
Does it have anything to do with
the fact that the original writers of the
R code were Robert Gentlemaan & Ross Ihaka?

How about "S"? Why did Becker, Chambers and Wilks call it S?
