[R] color plot

newbie question:
anytime I try something like...
plot(a[1],a[3],type="l",color="red"), or lines(a[1],a[3],type="l",color="red") ...
I get:
            Warning: parameter "color" couldn't be set in high-level plot()
function

How do I get color line plots?
