My RedHat 5.2 system has the following curses packages installed:
ncurses3-1.9.9e-7
ncurses-4.2-10
ncurses-devel-4.2-10
ncurses version 4 is the old BSD-style curses package, which is being phased out
in favor of the new curses (version 3-1.9), which uses a different numbering
scheme. It's a pretty standard part of the distribution. I didn't know you
could get away with not installing it.
