[R] Mathematical Superscript on the y-axis of a plot

I am trying to get superscripts on the y-axis. I keeping getting syntax
error:

This works as advertised:
> plot(c(1:10), ylab= expression(paste(x^ theta)))

This does not:
>plot(c(1:10), ylab= expression(paste(x^ {++})))

Note that I am trying to get ++ as superscript.
Any suggestions?
