I have a version which trace most of the operation until the read-eval
looop start (both the user interface and the R initialization -
base, rprofile,...). I used to understand why under Win3.1 (no debugger)
the program quit just after starting (the same situation, you can see).
There the problem was very stupid. It seems that in the Win32s
C runtime library fopen(NULL,"r") 
behaves like exit(0), no message, no error, only exiting.
I cannot make this version available now (I am not in Dept.) but
tomorrow or at last on saturday I will put the executable on the ftp 
site.
Hoping  we can understand at least where the program exit.
