Bill,
 thank you for all the good questions on R.
They *are* helpful for improvement of code and/or documentation
and useful to other R users.

Just one note however:

  Questions on "snapshot code" (i.e., currently R 0.62)
  which do not apply to the released code (R 0.61.x currently)

  *really* should NOT go to R-help at all.
  Using snapshot code is meant for users who are considering themselves
  ``fit for R-devel''.
  Actually, some of these questions should probably only go to R-core.
  In your case, the documentation for the "dev.xxx" functions has been on
  our todo list for a while..
