[R] basic graphics

Dear friends. Is there some basic text to browse for a beginner in R on graphics capabilities ?
I wanted to produce a simple graph of Y~X with Y in three groups and would like to specify symbols and colours for each group. In the "notes" by Venables either pairs or coplot are mentioned to display multivariate variables but neither seem to apply.
