R-beta: Debian 2.0 and R

Thanks for all those who sent me email regarding the error message I got
when I tried to compile R on a Debian 2.0 system (which is a glibc2 based
linux distribution -- Prof Ripley: I apologize for not providing more of
the details in my query.)  Debian systems let you have both gcc and the
egcs version egcc in the system.  By providing the appropriate path in the
config.site for LIBS (thanks to Doug Bates) I was able to compile the code
correctly.
