R-beta: command line editing?

Thanks Mike for your quick reply.

Well I am running Linux (Slackware) here which has bash as the default
shell, so if bash uses readline library, it must be there somewhere.  But
R doesn't find it it the installation process.

(Right now up arrow gives
 ^[[A
)
