Thanks once again everyone who helped. I first tried just changing the
directory structure, but that didn't work. So then I deleted everything
and started over. But then I ran into problems becuase I tried to install
the software into /usr/local/Rblahblah as wsimpson. So I became su, and
the problems persisted. Finally I deleted everything again and logging in
as root prior to installation. That time it worked. So I learned:
- log in as root prior to installation
- su not same as root
Best wishes,
Bill
PS on Slackware vs other distributions. I agree Debian or RedHat were my
preferences, since the package management appears to be a big plus. I
actually installed RedHat to begin with. I ran into problems installing
the network card my tech services told me to buy, [plug and play
problems!] so had to wind up asking them for help and they installed
Slackware.
PPS Not all Mac users are mutton heads.... Did you know Ron Thisted (Unic
Chicago) uses a Mac (or at least was using Mac when they filmed "Against
All Odds" [excellent stats video series])?
