R-beta: Dec Alphas

I wouls like to use R for teaching but I am having problems with the
installation on our Alphas.
I have made 0.49 which runs until I ask it to fit a generalized linear
model when I get a segmentation error. I have been unsuccesssful in my
installation of
0.60.1 . Here it refuses to run.
Any advice will be most welcome.
PS. The teaching I intend is mainly about glims.
