R-beta: R-0.49 under SunOS-4.1.3

Compiling and installing R-0.49 on a SunOS-4.1.3 (gcc-2.6.3) seemingly
works OK, but when I try to start R, I get the message:

ld.so: Undefined symbol: _sys_nerr

Too old gnu stuff? Or what is missing? (I also tried R-0.50; ditto.)
