Dear Russ,

I had the same problem in my vignettes and setting both message and warning
to FALSE seems to remove all unwanted output:

```{r message=FALSE, warning=FALSE}
library("afex")
library("ggplot2")
library("cowplot")
theme_set(theme_grey())
```
