Thanks to help form Wes Mason at KU and Jesper Gadin in r-devel, I
compiled R-devel on RHEL 6.

R-devel requires install of newer gzip, bzip2, xz, pcre, and curl.
Compiles of bzip2 and pcre require a slightly greater-than-usual
amount of attention to detail.  I wrote it all out:
