Maybe your readline is too old? Maybe you have a readline-replacement  
library (e.g. libedit) that poses as readline? Try installing some  
recent readline (incl. -dev part) - the current version is 6.0. If  
that doesn't help, look at config.log around the rl_completion_matches.
