Bradley,

this is getting off topic. Please check the result of graphics devices  
in R (X11, Quartz,...) and you'll find you that Quartz is consistent  
with all others. Also see Brian's response.

Although I can see what you want, it's not possible with the current  
graphics model and it's a wish, not a bug. Also it has nothing to do  
with Quartz whatsoever.

PS: I agree that you may want to file a bug report on Preview, but  
then I guess Apple knows about it and but they may be reluctant to  
change it, because it would affect all graphics in OS X, not just PDF.  
(see 7.5.1 and 7.6.3 in the PDF 1.6 specs)
