Hi Duncan,

This is even more confusing with a matrix:

         [,1] [,2] [,3] [,4]
    [1,]    5    2   -1   -4
    [2,]    4    1   -2   -5
    [3,]    3    0   -3   -6
    > x[invisible(2),3]
    [1] -2
    > x[2,invisible(3)]
    > .Last.value
    [1] -2
