[Rd] 2.3.1 install bug (PR#9123)

What compiler is this?

This is a compiler error, as the compiler has generated incorrect 
assembler.  That is not a bug in R!

This works on with the current versions of gcc (3.4.6 and 4.1.1) on 
Solaris 8, both 32-bit (as here) and 64-bit.
