I just finished building R-devel (rsync'd tonight) on a fully updated
FC1 system with:

gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 3.3.2 20040108 (Red Hat Linux 3.3.2-6)

It built fine and passed make check-all without problem.

You might want to try to re-download the source, in case you had a
corrupt transfer.
