Use

  attr(x, "class") <- data.class(x)

*but* please don't fix anything until we decide what 1.7.0 is going to do.
That's despite my having fixed MASS but that is part of the R-devel 
checking process.

(Incidentally, we need to ensure that 1.7.0 acts consistently with and 
without methods loaded, so code like this may still be needed.)
