(I think Duncan and Dirk both meant "$s" instead of "s".)

I'd also suggest:
  @mylist = ("string1","string2","string3");
  if (grep /^$s$/, @mylist) {print "yes\n"}

(after all, There's More Than One Way To Do It.)
