I have been working independently of Marc and Peter (bit of a waste of
my weekend on reflection) to find the bug. I have abstracted a small
program from the R sources that will reproduce the problem, and I will
use this in my bug report to Red Hat. It should print the number 0 then
exit. The bug manifests itself when you optimize, and in this case, the
program prints 1.

I found out - quite by accident - that the "-pedantic" flag turns off
the bug, although I can't imagine why. Any suggestions?
