config checks for --with-gnome need update (PR#1996)

if, e.g., libgnomeui.a is not present, the build for a --with-gnome
configuration will fail.  (for my plain RH 7.2 a number of *-devel-*
rpms needed to be added to get the required libraries: 
gnome-libs-devel,  gtk+-devel, glib-devel, libglade-devel.)
