I am half way through a change to R's font specification 
(see http://www.stat.auckland.ac.nz/~paul/R/fonts.html
and http://www.stat.auckland.ac.nz/~paul/R/paul-todo.html)
which will eventually filter down to R-code, including this change.

(unfortunately, I cannot give an estimate any more accurate than Brian's
at this stage)
