Well, if you keep your files in cvs as lots of people do, then R CMD
check gives lots of warnings messages about the file permissions after
you checkout your files with the wrong umask. Not that this in itself is
so bad, but when one gets lots of warning messages all the time then
they often get ignored and the important ones are missed. So I think it
is useful to get the settings right and avoid the warning messages.
Don't get me wrong, I think this is a problem in the Linux
distributions, not in R.
