I can confirm that with Mozilla 1.0 (20020605)
and
help.start(browser = "mozilla")
the search applet gives the same error message and
search/keywords are not working whereas with
help.start(browser = "netscape")
(with quite an old version of netscape) the search applet
*does* work.
(this is a highly up-patched redhat 7.1)

(I have not tried yet to debug. Always felt Mozilla should be able to
