What I don't get is that I need to be root on my Unix boxen too in order to
install R package (at least into their default loci where I prefer to keep
them).  With either the big bad root hat on, on the fact that you should
inherit ownership alteration rights within your local directories (below
$HOME) say I do not see 2) as an issue.

I cannot speak to 1).

It was just a suggestion, anyway. I wrote myself a release.sh which grabs
files, copies them locally, alters them then runs R CMD build.
