in this cases, they text was from an e-mail (from a `R for MacOS' user who
most proably had a SwissGerman keyboard {but probably no Emacs..})) but it
was smart Emacs (VM) dealing ``automagically'' with strange encodings ...

yes, I think that might be useful and make sense.
Compatibility with S(plus) might be a point here, but then we *do* have
locale dependent syntax anyway.
