You've forgotten -fPIC. That should be found automatically: it is on
my Solaris 2.7 system using gcc-3.0.
Set CPICFLAGS (and probably FPICFLAGS and CXXPICFLAGS) in config.site,
make clean, reconfigure, rebuild.
