Moved to R-devel: I think this is actually an issue about the X11 device
and is getting technical.  Maybe CRAN/Devel packages are best discussed on
R-devel anyway.

That X server has DPS and type 1 scaleable fonts including for Helvetica.
The X11 device chooses fonts by

devX11.c:static char *fontname_R6 =
"-adobe-helvetica-%s-%s-*-*-*-%d-*-*-*-*-*-*

and if the X server does not have Adobe Helvetica in the specified size
etc one would need to look at exactly what it does give you.  My
Solaris one will have Adobe Helvetica in the right encoding.
