The aim of this design was so that, for example, a plot size specified in
inches would retain its physical dimensions when the window was resized
(which does not happen in S as Brian has pointed out).  As you have
discovered, the design has some problems when you try to save and restore a
large list of graphics parameter settings.  We are currently working on some
new graphics features which will avoid this problem.
