I've been running R on alpha for about a year and haven't seen this
problem... can you provide a method to reproduce it?

The argument over whether the system should recognise
/usr/local/lib as a legitimate location for libraries
rages back and forth but believe me that there are many
systems that ONLY work with the -L switch.
Do you have something strange and nasty lurking in
/usr/local/lib, maybe old versions of something ?
Do you actually HAVE a directory /usr/local/lib ?

OK, I have been using debian linux so there are
no doubt some differences right there. Also,
my chip is only ev4 (possibly irrelevant).
