I have re-written that code to allow you to use an afm file in any
encoding. I'll send you the patch in a couple of days (I'm away from base
at present).  My idea is that 1.2.0 will support user-specified families,
but the work is not yet complete.

You can use some of the postscript utility files that come with gs to
write a ps program to do so. PostScript experts only, of course.
