The prime developer of g77 has withdrawn, so last time I looked its
future was in serious doubt.  

I agree that Fortran 95 is the future for the Fortran-using community,
and is the standard used by commercial compilers nowadays. I think 
using it on Windows for R would cause us serious difficulties.
