There is a (by now) well-known bug with the standard RedHat toolchain
that makes it generate corrupt .so files. Normally, that affects only
a couple of packages (akima for one) but adding BLAS could be tickling
the bug in new places...
Martyn Plummer reported this to RedHat, but they've done nothing about
it yet (bugzilla report 13490).
Try upgrading your gcc to a recent one, either by compiling it up from
sources (fairly easy but takes quite a bit of space on your disk) or
installing RPM packages from the rawhide distribution. Notice that you
may get some trouble using the latter procedure since all the
egcs-something packages are now gcc-something, so you cannot just
update. gcc 2.95.1 does work for me in some cases where the egcs
compiler fails.
