Um.  Real tar (the AT&T based one such as that on Solaris 2.7) needs
chXf. GNU tar is a rather different animal.

This is chiefly my fault: I modified this to work on Solaris, but tested
it on a machine where tar is GNU tar ....

You will note that build is not finished yet:

    ### !!! Missing: check & rebuild various indices !!!
