dear all,
well, all of you 
a) living in windowsland
b) being a little bit adventurous

i need your help to check out something.

finally, we have managed to get remote dcom running with r.
what does that mean?
it means that we can use client software
(for example excel) and this client software call r on a server
on another machine.

i managed to get it running in the following configuration:

client on windows 95 (osr2)
server on windows 2000 professional

if possible, i would like reports for other configurations.

prerequesites
current version of r (1.001) installed on both machines.
dcom server from cran, nonstandard extensions
for test purposes:
r-excel interface from nonstandard extensions

dcom + dcomcnfg installed on the win95 machine
it is available from
http://www.microsoft.com/com/dcom/dcom95/download.asp
you also need the tools on winnt or win2k,
but there there are automatically installed by the os.

now, dcomcnfg has to be used on both client and server

win2k pro as server (no nt domain)
start dcomcnfg
select StatConnctorSrv

security tab
custom access permissions
everyone allow access
custom launch permissions
everyone allow launch

identity tab
the interactive user

on win95 client
start dcomcnfg
location tab
run application on the following computer
enter the network name

the user loggrd in on the win95 machine
has to be known on the win2k machine.

if the installation works
(it worked in my case)
you can use xcel on the client and all the r function calls from within
excel
will be executed on the server machine.

voila:
statistical client server computing with a remote server

configuration can get tedious.
to me, it is unclear if reboot is needed after
changing access rights.
if you want to help,
try often enough.
and PLEASE report running configurations.
