I had a similar problem with R crashing (I think it was a system error rather
than a bus error). In the end it was a hardware problem due to a standard IDE
cable on a new udma ATA 66 drive. R seemed to be the main thing that drove the
system hard enough to cause a problem. It wasn't severe enough to crash the
system, just R.

The problem stopped if I slowed the system to 400MHz. The place that sold me the
system said I only needed the special cable on systems with a blue IDE
connector, but the disk drive manufacture's tech support said the cable would
probably fix the problem, so I got one and tried it, and it did fix the problem.
The special cables have finer wires and possibly a twisted pair. They have blue
connectors to match the (sometimes) blue connectors on the motherboard.
