Error in axis(side, at, labels, ...) : location and label lengths differ
Reason: lab is one of the "..." which are passed down to all plots inside
plot.default, including axis(1, ...)
"lab" in axis is interpreted as the "labels" argument
..
Different fixes seem possible,
an easy one: Make `lab' a new explicit argument of plot.default().
