That's a long story, and I should maybe add something on this to my FAQ
eventually. In a nutshell, the point was that whereas we could use f2c
for creating a C-only version and provide the necessary run-time version
of libf2c along with the base R distribution, the problem is that MANY
add-on packages, in particular the ones that can be ported from statlib
S versions, but also others, come with Fortran sources. So eventually,
you either need a full-featured Fortran compiler or all of f2c.
And this is what we have now.
