An idea for something better than read.table

I think so.  However, why can't we extend scan() accordingly?

E.g.,

  scan(FILE,
       what = list(Item = factor(levels=1:4,labels=c("A","B","C","D")),
                   Size = numeric(),
                   Year = factor(levels=1980:1985)))

???
