I think we have established that format probably works as intended, and
that there is a bug in as.matrix.data.frame that I have just corrected.
Personally, I suspect that is you want to use " and \ in character strings
it is too much to expect consistent handling over all conversions.
That S has similar inconsistencies and yet I have never heard a complaint
suggests that it is a very rare requirement.
