R (off-topic): How to make mail-archives searchable?

As you (hopefully) know, the mail archives of
 R-devel, R-help and R-announce
have been available via FTP from here, and now also from CRAN.

I had spent a little effort to enhance these monthly plain unix-mail
folders to be 'Emacs outlined'
(i.e., emacs is put in outline-mode when you open one of these).
and you all are probably efficient users of grep, etc.

However, for average R users, a better user interface is desired:
Something like statlib's search engine (on S-news)
IN ADDITION to these simple plain files, or one of the many other
CGI / HTML based archive searchers should be added.

On the other hand, we have not yet desired if CRAN servers really should be
(mis)usable via CGI running on them; then, of course, the alternative are
java `beans'.

Since I've never installed any of these, I'd like to get some advice
of more experienced people like you.

Since this is a slightly off-topic subject, you could reply only to me
and I'd summarize to R-devel...
