R-alpha: comparing alpha and numeric

Is this behavior correct? (R 0.49 on SunOS 4.1.4)

> "a">1
 TRUE
> "a"<1
 FALSE
> "a"==1
 FALSE
> "a">2
 TRUE
> "a"<2
 FALSE

 (I know, this is like the old joke: "Doctor, it hurts when I do this."
"Well, don't do that!"  But it might be useful to have this caught by an
error or warning message ...)
