On the memory/database/persistent storage issue,the Texas persistent
store, for which Rscheme has an interface, some of the stuff on object
serialization in Java (Java beans variant of OpenDoc's
Bento/quilt/whatever) and (gulp) OLE structured storage might be worth
a look in this context also.
