I understand the difficulty of getting to this to work reliably and
appreciate your workaround.   I dug a little deeper to understand the
fragment of code that downloads ESSR.R, ended up clearing ~/.config/ESSR/,
and the problem went away!   It appears to download fine.  Sorry I can't
give any insight into why it failed in the first place.

Hopefully this thread will help someone who tries to use ess-remote without
a reliable internet connection, or who somehow ends up with a read-only
~/.config directory
