Which version of ESS are you using?  Specifically, are you using
ESS-12.04-3 that
was released today?  To check, please type
C-h v ess-version <RET>

Please give a reproducible example of the behavior you don't like.
Something that
we can duplicate on our machine so we can see exactly what is happening.
Send it to the entire list.
