yes. okay;  it does sound like a path issue.  If you want a simple
workaround, why not try the following.

Open a terminal, and then type

"R"

if R can be found okay within that terminal, quit R and then do:

"open /Applications/Emacs.app"

or wherever you have Emacs.app and then try again with ESS/R.
