Thanks for pointing the problem. I was not aware of it.

I don't know how to "unlock" the class but it should be possible. You
can look into the code of ref classes and propose a workaround. I would
be happy to include it in ess-developer. I also might have a look into
it myself but it won't be very soon, not in the following months I am
afraid.
