I'm having trouble as well.  By chance, do you have --enable-profiling
specified in your Emacs build?  I see that valid_image_p consumes 81.6%
of the Emacs processing time.  Of course, this could be a totally
unrelated bug.  I'm using Emacs 24.2 on RHEL 6.3 (AMD64).
